Day 3 – Forty Days in the Shade of God’s Care
Singing in the Rain
For you bless the godly, O LORD;
you surround them with your shield of love.
~ Psalm 5:12
Just once, I’d like to turn an idea into an invention that could positively impact humanity. Take,
for example, Samuel Fox’s 1852 invention: the umbrella. I spent a week at a conference in the
Redwood forest this month and pulled out that wonderful invention nearly every day. The rain
soaked the ground around me while I stayed dry under the shadow of its protection. I was
literally, “singing in the rain” while others ran for refuge.
God invites us to run under the protection of His care today. Regardless of life’s storms that
whip around us, or the endless dripping of circumstantial rain, Jesus offers reason to rejoice
within the shield of His love: His face is turned toward us. His eyes of compassion understand us
better than we understand ourselves. His shield of protection surrounds us, bringing
unexplainable joy in the worst of circumstances. The warmth of his smiles drives away the
gloom that wilts our hope. Let’s run under the umbrella of His protection today with our
requests, both big and small, and wait expectantly in the warmth and safety of His presence.
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;
let them sing joyful praises forever.
Spread your protection over them,
that all who love your name may be filled with joy.
~Psalm 5:11
