We all have them. Decisions that carry a lot of weight. They could be financial decisions, geographical decisions, spiritual decisions, relational decisions. You know you’re facing a hard decision when it keeps you up at night wondering the right road to take. They can cause division in a home, anxiety in the gut, and weariness in the mind.
I read today, “It seemed good to us and to the Holy Spirit…” Acts 15:28
The disciples were being pressed to make a decision regarding traditions some people thought new believers should be required to abide by. How did they land on the right decision? How could they say with confidence, “it seemed good to us, and we felt the Holy spirit’s backing on this decision?”
If one reads the text, I believe Scripture provides a pathway for this kind of confidence when we have tough decisions to make:
- Seek Counsel from Wise Believers: Allow mature, God-seeking individuals who yearn for God’s purposes to prevail, to hear the decision you’re wrestling with.
- Share Ways in Which You See God Moving: What doors have opened? Why do you sense God might be leading you in one direction or another?
- Be Patient: Wait for agreement regarding large decisions. If they impact you as a couple, a family, or a church, be willing to wait for hearts to respond and for God’s peace to
enter the decision. - Be Assured: Responding to hard decisions in a God-honoring way will cause great joy to abound for you and for those around you.
What hard decisions are you navigating? Why not try these steps found in Acts 15?
Take a moment to read Acts 15 – Then give these four steps a try.
If you do, I’m pretty certain you, too, will be able to say with assurance, “It seemed good to us
and to the Holy Spirit.
