I wandered onto the beach near Florence, Oregon. The crashing waves and the song of the seagulls became a soundtrack to my imaginations. In the distance, I noticed an array of large, beach towels stretched on the warm sand. Walking closer, their identity emerged. Limp and lifeless kites basked in the sun. I dropped onto a nearby dune and waited for some sign of life from the resting kites. Just as I dusted the sand from my jeans to head back to town, a gust of wind began to rustle the sand along the ragged beach.
Instantly, that gust filled the cells of the kites. The power of the wind lifted the kites. It gave life to the dormant kites. Within seconds, the sky became a colorful display of dancing kites as they whipped and swayed with the movement of the wind. The sight created a hunger for that same flood of life to flow through me.
In Acts 1, Jesus told the disciples to wait for his coming gift—His Holy Spirit. He would share his powerful life into them, equipping them to accomplish their God-given purpose. Scripture records the Holy Spirit came like a wind, breathing new life into the believers. Those waiting kites portray the life God offers to anyone who will wait for His gust of life-wind to fill them.
Like the waiting kites, we need to position ourselves daily to receive from God. What does this look like for us today? We intentionally carve out space in our day for God’s renewing presence—this means leaving margin within our day to talk to God and to hear from him. As we open His Word, our aim is not to get through a passage, but to allow that passage of scripture to get through us.
As the wind filled the kites, we should expect the Holy Spirit to meet us where we’re at on any routine day and renew life within us:
- He will begin to fill our life with hope, vision, and expectancy.
- He will lift our life above the weight of our circumstances.
- He will give life to every dormant moment of our day. Spending time with him is not simply a compartmentalized activity within our day. Jesus infiltrates the whole of our day, breathing life to every conversation, every routine responsibility, every situation and opportunity.
Like a kite, we begin to dance and respond to the movement of God’s Spirit. He invites us into God-sized opportunities and experiences that renew our faith and restore our love.
Next week we will look at the adventures that await the responsive heart.
