Day 2: Some Days I Feel Too Small

Psalm 3

O Lord, I have so many enemies…against me.
² So many are saying,
    “God will never rescue him!”  

 

There are those days. Days I feel small in this big world—days the enemy says I’m too small. Too small for God’s notice. Too small to make a difference in a world, busted up all around me.

 

One woman, the block over, is suffering. Afraid. How does she find refuge in the home where her husband hung away his final wounds. Does she feel small—too small for anyone’s kindness? Has she heard the Enemy whisper, “God will never rescue you.” Does she wonder if her voice would reach heaven if she mustered the strength to cry out?

 

Amidst the voices that belittle the Psalmist, he refuses to believe his life has no value to the One who had molded it:

 

³ But you, O Lord, are a shield around me;
    You are my glory, the One who holds my head high.
⁴ I cried out to the Lord,
    and He answered me from His holy mountain.

 

The Hands that held you at creation, hold your weary head today. The One who heard your first cry when you entered this big, busted-up world, hears your every cry—timid and small. His presence is a shield, encircling you today. Oh, that we would gain confidence and refuge in His care.

Then…we might extend assurance of that unfailing love to someone a block over—someone who feels too small to lift her voice today.

 ⁵ I lay down and slept,
    yet I woke up in safety,
    for the Lord was watching over me.

⁶ I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies
    who surround me on every side.

⁷ Arise, O Lord!
    Rescue me, my God!
Slap all my enemies in the face!
    Shatter the teeth of the wicked!
⁸ Victory comes from you, O Lord.
    May you bless your people.
